Greater Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - February 17, 2009 -- Greater Fort Lauderdale continues to see increases in multicultural meetings and tourism. From family reunions, to meetings and weddings to a good old-fashioned beach vacation, the area is popular with leisure travelers as well as those who come to meet in a beach chic destination.
To further enhance the multicultural experience, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau has redesigned its multicultural guide to include insights into the destination's colorful history and today's vibrant communities from the beaches to the Everglades.
"Potential visitors will discover activities and local gems that make Greater Fort Lauderdale a place where color comes out to play," said Albert Tucker, vice president of multicultural development, Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. "This new guide, together with the online component of minority-owned and operated businesses, restaurants, special events and areas of historical significance, is a useful resource to plan a vacation, wedding, meeting or family reunion.
A recent addition to the local historic register and one of interest to multicultural travelers is a five-mile strand of beach that was once commonly referred to as the "colored beach," now known as John U. Lloyd Beach State Park in Dania Beach. A Historic Heritage Marker has been placed on the site on February 13, 2009. The Broward County Historical Commission spearheaded the effort to have the State's Division of Historical Resources declare the beach a place of historical significance under the State Historic Marker Program.
Also of particular interest to the multicultural traveler is the only international cricket stadium in the country. Located in Central Broward Regional Park, the 5,000-seat, state-of-the-art venue hosts high-profile cricket matches by some of the world's top teams, including the AZADI CUP tournament that was part of the Indo-Pak Independence Day festival.
