Ok, you’ve had your chocolate. Now how about some dinner to go with that dessert? Think of this as the reverse-companion piece to our previous blog about Galler chocolate shop in Fort Lauderdale. Because I had the most amazing seafood with some friends on Friday night and I’d feel remiss if I didn’t pass it along. There is lots of seafood in this seaside part of the country, as you’d imagine. Much of it is good, but I find that you have to search a bit for South Florida’s finest and freshest. I had been to Seafood World once before and thought it was wonderful. But on Friday, my girlfriend and I joined two friends, allowing us to sample several dishes. That was when I realized just how good Seafood World is.
Walk inside the modest-looking restaurant on US 1 in Lighthouse Point and you face a case filled with a variety of seafood, including whole fish, a reminder that this place is also a fish market. “You can see how fresh this fish is,” my foodie girlfriend commented about a red snapper or something. “Look at the eyes. That’s how you can tell.” I only know that what we ordered was some of the best-tasting seafood I’ve had in South Florida. Ever. We started with generous cups of New England clam chowder and conch chowder, with lots of savory clams or conch in each spoonful. From there, we ordered four appetizers and that was enough food to satisfy our appetites. Firm, spicy buffalo shrimp. Crisp conch salad with a refreshing blend of chopped vegetables. Fat, earthy stuffed mushrooms and a calamari salad that had a little spice-bite, very Asian tasting with some of the most tender calamari I can recall. Our waitress, Donna, brought out each dish separately so that we had time to enjoy one before diving into the next. After two hours of delightful conversation and food, and a bottle of Chardonnay, our light dinner for four cost $73, plus tip. Seafood World is located at 4602 N. Federal Highway, just several blocks north of Sample Road, in Lighthouse Point. For more information, call 954-942-0740. After all that Belgian chocolate, you’ll want a memorable meal to wash it down.
