Jan 2: Resolutely Fun
As much as I enjoy the Fort Lauderdale lifestyle, I still feel like I miss too much along the way. I’m lucky enough to write about where I live, which gives me an excuse to take off work to see Cradle of Christianity at the art museum. I’ll do that soon. I do get out to eat and drink and see things more often than many residents, including taking some summer getaways in nearby hotels. But as 2007 dawns, it’s time for those resolutions again. This year, I’m resolving to experience some local attractions and activities that I’ve somehow managed to miss all these years – or maybe just haven’t sampled for a long time.

1) Stranahan House: I’ve worked or lived forever within walking distance of this restored mansion on the New River and still haven’t toured it. It’s Fort Lauderdale’s oldest house and I’ll see it this year.
2) Deep sea fishing: I’ve fished in the ocean but never off Fort Lauderdale and, most importantly, never for big game fish. I want to try the Hemingway thing and pose with a marlin that isn’t wearing a baseball uniform.
3) Jet skis: As a licensed race car driver, I’ve always envied those folks spraying a rooster tail behind them as they bomb recklessly over the waves. It’s time I put on a swimsuit and test my need for speed on the water.
4) Segway: Don’t these goofy two-wheel devices look like fun to you? They rent them in Fort Lauderdale and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and I’m prepared to tool around the beach looking silly too.
5) Sawgrass Recreation Area: After moving to Fort Lauderdale 17 years ago, I took many friends and relatives for airboat rides. But I haven’t been back for several years, so I’ll round up someone else for another excursion through the Everglades.
6) Jungle Queen: Can you believe I’ve never cruised the river on this local classic? Everyone I know who’s taken the Jungle Queen has come back enthused, tourist and resident alike. I couldn’t say, but I’ll change that. I’ll be sure to let you know how it was later this year – and maybe also have a wild tale about the 12-foot marlin that got away.
