Oct 1: Fine Dining Finds
I’ve always loved to eat in restaurants. Any restaurant, if the food is good. I relish wonderful hot dog joints (bad pun intended). I seek out inexpensive Italian or Greek places. I frequent pleasant, affordable cafes. Really, I welcome just about any option for eating a meal outside my home. But I’m among those folks whose first dining choice usually would be an upscale, pricey restaurant that serves the finest foods. When I was a kid, my parents always took me to some expensive restaurant on my birthday, letting me order anything I wanted. It was at one of these birthday dinners that I enjoyed my earliest taste of things like filet mignon and cherries jubilee.

I haven’t changed much in the years since then. One of my favorite ways to spend an evening is to get nicely dressed and head out to a great restaurant, lingering over a two hour or three hour meal that costs as much as my car payment. The problem, unfortunately, is that I can’t afford to eat at these top-quality spots very often. So I’m looking forward to the chance to try some excellent places from now through mid-November as part of the Dine Out Lauderdale promotion. (You can read the details on this website by clicking on the home page's "Dine Out" icon.)

I’ve eaten many times at some of the nearly 40 restaurants participating in Dine Out Lauderdale, including Coco Asian Bistro & Bar and the Mai-Kai. Others are new to me, but those I've tried were wonderful for both the food and atmosphere. Dine Out choices include Shula’s on the Beach, Trina at the Atlantic and Fish in Fort Lauderdale, as well as Aizia at the Westin Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, Le Bistro in Pompano Beach, Food Amongst the Flowers in Wilton Manors – and other places spread around Broward County. My first stop, though, will be Cero at the new St. Regis on the Fort Lauderdale beach. This is a very expensive restaurant in a world-class hotel. For a stunning fixed price of $35 per person, I can try dinner at Cero – which has drawn rave reviews so far. The meal includes a choice from among four appetizers, four entrees and four desserts, with main courses such as seared diver scallops and herb crusted organic salmon. It all looks terrific. Yeah, sure I know it isn’t filet mignon and cherries jubilee. But somehow I’ll manage anyway.
