Jan 4: Photo Ops: Part Two
The new year is just four days old as I write this first blog of 2008 – and I feel optimistic about the months ahead. I’m not really sure why exactly. It’s not as if we don’t all face huge challenges, individually and collectively. But somehow I sense a good wind blowing. So this seems to me a fine period for anyone, tourist or local, to stop and appreciate the beauty that’s all around greater Fort Lauderdale. That’s why I want to start the year with the second in our occasional series about excellent photo opportunities in this area – places that offer images you may not find in the postcard racks. I walked around this photogenic spot over the weekend and found it just as lovely as ever.

I’m talking about the Riverfront walkway down by the New River, especially the section just east of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. And especially at twilight. That’s my suggestion and here’s why. At that time of day, there is a special blend of interesting architectural shapes, dramatic tropical foliage, unusual light and lively activity on and around the river. This mixture can make for some wonderful photographs if you look with a creative eye.

Sit on the park bench just west of the River House restaurant, for example, and watch as the sunset bursts out colorfully, then gives way to those brief, blue twilight moments. You’ll see the imposing bulk of the Broward Center across a small, sparkling expanse of the river that bends into the land like a bay. Across the water, on the opposite shore, sit tall luxury condo buildings. Palm trees stand out against the sky all around, silhouetted in this backlit scene. If you happen to notice a yacht motoring past at just the right instant when the light begins to fade, you can capture a beautiful image. Or you can walk farther along the river and look around for other pretty views. The photo ops are there. I actually spotted a professional camera crew in this very area on Sunday, shooting stills of two stunning models at about that same time of day. You may need a faster film if you’re using a conventional camera. But that’s a small investment for a photograph worth showing your friends. And a rich new year experience to kick off the hopeful months ahead.
