Jan 25: A Close Shave

You’re visiting an unfamiliar city on vacation. Then you look in the mirror and suddenly see that you really need a haircut. Where do you go? Many guys know that feeling. I suppose it happens to women too, though somehow I imagine the females among us are better planners. But fellas, if you travel much, you’ve been there, right? You want to find some place, but you don’t want just any place. You want a good haircut. Preferably not too expensive. If you can drop in without an appointment, that’s even better.

I have just the shop. Tucked away in a tiny storefront in Fort Lauderdale, on tony Las Olas Boulevard of all unlikely spots, there is a classic barber shop that will take you back to your childhood. With a twist. Called simply “Las Olas Barber Shop,” this is haircut heaven for guys. Whether a regular or first-timer, you’ll get an excellent cut. Best of all, you’ll enjoy a neck shave with a straight razor and warm foam. Then you get dusted off with a round talcum brush, which always makes me feel something like home plate at a baseball game. But I love it.

I said the best thing was the neck shave. That’s not quite right. The best things are the barbers. There’s Frankie, a fast-talking and opinionated guy who seems like a barber from central casting. Then there are Anne Marie and Karli. They’re the twist I mentioned earlier. Attractive and attractively dressed, each is a fine barber. I’ve been going to Karli for nearly a year now and I haven’t had a bad haircut yet. But quite honestly, it’s also fun being fussed over by a lovely, long-haired lady for a half hour. They’re all nice folks in a comfortable environment geared toward men. You can call ahead for an appointment but most of us don’t. It’s a throwback to the old days, when you just walked into a barber shop, said hi and picked up a magazine. So you wait a little while maybe. Usually not very long, sometimes not at all. In a place like this, waiting is kind of fun anyway. Las Olas Barber Shop is at 1400 E. Las Olas. The phone is 954-258-7183. Say hi to Karli for me.

I wanted to just comment on what the one person said about about the shave he received from Bob at the Las Olas Barbershop. My name is Ashley and Bob is my father. First of all, my father only gives neck shaves not facial shaves, so clearly you just lied to everybody on this site about your "horrible shave". Second of all, my dad has been asked numerous times from inspectors in both Ohio and Florida to become a health inspector because of his cleanliness and unstanding upkeep of barbershops. Clearly another lie that you just put up. And finally, my dad gives great haircuts and has been commended by many of his peers and customers on his work. He was also a military barber and has more experience cutting hair than most people in South Florida, so I'm wondering if you lied about receiving a haircut there as well...Let us know how your next imaginary visit goes :)

And the trashing goes on and on.
If you people at the shop down the street spent as much time on building your shop as you have on tearing mine down you might be as successful as our shop is. Please get a life and stop putting phoney postings up on this site. David Quinn Owner Las Olas Barbershop

I went there to get a treat of a haircut and hot shave. I would never recommend to ANYONE!! Worst haircut I've ever received. I don't think Bob knows what a tape-up is. I still had stubble on my face after getting a hot shave. I had to ask Bob to change the blade before he did my hot shave (I just saw him finishing one). HOW DISGUSTING!! I can't believe I had to remind him. This never happens in Orlando where I'm from.

Jason

Hi Josh, thanks for visiting my shop.I need to clarify that in order to have a barber shop you must have a licensed barber on staff. Our full time licensed barber is Bob. Since we are on Las Olas we offer a variety of services and do employ some cosmetologists for womens hair services and people that do not want a barber type cut. And yes i am a owner not a barber. I decided to save a piece of history on the boulevard and went to great expense to do so. I am proud of my little shop. And i do meet the requirements of a barbershop. Thank You
David Quinn

David,

My name is Josh and wanted to thank you for the info. I went to your shop and read the wonderful article regarding Ben who was the barber and owner until he passed away. Your shop is beautiful and traditional.

Unfortunately, when I went to your shop you did not have any licensed barbers as the anonymous had stated. I did get an average haircut but nothing to be praising your establishment for. I also found out you are not a barber, just an owner.

I miss the days when owners of shops were the barbers or at least able to cut hair.

Its ironic that a anonymous person bashes a shop that has been in business since 1951 and is a staple on Las Olas Boulvard and then gives a website that is the name of the shop he is bashing leading to his shop.
I think the first review showed the true nature of the shop. The only problem with the first review is it listed the phone number incorrectly.
The correct phone number is 954-462-1351 I am the owner of the shop David Quinn as i dont need to remain anonymous to bash someones business.

I have to disagree. Karli and Anne Marie are cosmetologists not BARBERS. You should check their license and make sure their a licensed barber before they do a neck shave. In the state of Florida you must be a licensed barber to use a razor on the SKIN.

You should check on a REAL traditional barber owned and operated by a Master Barber. Luis is skilled in EVERY male hair style and can create any image you choose.

Check out their website, you can even make an online appointment.

www.LasOlasBarber.com

Hello All ... The Real Las Olas Barber Shop (the one actually on Las Olas) is the best. I have been getting my haircuts there since moving here about 4 years ago. The people are very nice (and Karli is hotter than a Florida summer) and the prices are much more reasonable compared to all of the "new" barbers and stylists downtown. Nobody will ever go anywhere that is 100% perfect all the time. This place will not let you down.

Hi there…I am almost exactly one month behind you as I had surgery Dec. 4 in Miami Beach, FL. The warm weather helps and http://www.toppowerlevel.net I certainly don’t have to deal with snow or ice. Question: On your second visit to the doc, did he give you the instruction to do weight bearing at your own pace or with specific limits, and if so, what were they? I am scheduled for Jan 20 visit when I am expected to do wb with crutches. Also, how early did you do exercises, massages, and PT? Finally, when did you start ice?
I appreciate any answers you give me.
Thanks,
Eric

The shop that was doing all the bashing on the Las Olas Barbershop has gone out of business. Guess thats what happens when you covet something someone else has worked at for years. Our staff now consists of Bob-Masterbarber, Karli-cosmotologist mens and womens hair- and our new addition Lindsay Barber and cosmotologist. New clients are offered a $5.00 discount for their first cut. If you want a great cut at a reasonable price, in a classic friendly atmosphere call 954-462-1351 David Quinn Owner
