Tourism Sales
In April, Alfredo Gonzalez conducted a Canadian Sales Mission to Toronto. Alfredo, along with Fernando Harb, also conducted a FAM with the BizBash Group.  Alfredo and Josh Winston travelled to San Francisco on a West Coast Sales Mission. Josh and Fernando attended the Curise3sixty annual conference held at the Broward Convention Center. Josh also conducted a Luxury Hotel FAM and Alfredo finished up the month on a Latin American Sales Mission to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.

Multicultural Meetings
Greater Fort Lauderdale hosts the Kappa Alpha PSI Fraternity’s 100th Year Gala Celebration May 21 at the Broward County Convention Center. This coincides with the Kappa’s recent announcement that GFL was selected for the 2015 Kappa Regional Conference. The Unifest Cultural Celebration will take place at Vincent Torres Park in Lauderdale Lakes, May 22. And the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa will be the host hotel for the NAACP Leadership 500 Conference May 26-30, anticipating more than 700 attendees. Greater Fort Lauderdale is preparing for the. 105th Session of the National Baptist Congress (NBC), June 12–17, with more than 8,000 participants here for a week of Praise and Learning. Greater Fort Lauderdale will host Omega Psi Fraternity Florida State Meeting Sept 15-18, bringing approximately 550 Omega men and their families, to the Westin Cypress Creek. This is a prelude to bigger and better programs to come with the Omegas. Greater Fort Lauderdale is also being considered for the Omega's 76th Annual District Meeting, April 13, which brings Florida, the Caribbean, Alabama and the Carolina's together for a week of activities and experiences; and Omega's International Leadership Conference, June 2014, which is a four-day program that attracts more than 7,000 global attendees. Notable National Omega Men include: Bill Cosby, Tom Joyner, Michael Jordan and Earl Graves of Black Enterprise Magazine and Notable Local Omega Men include: Dorsey Miller, and Harry Harrell (owner of Tom Jenkins B-Q).

Superior Small Lodgings
Annual property reviews begin May 9, with inspector Roseanne Petit. To qualify, you must have 50 rooms or less, meet the Superior Small Lodging guidelines and pass the review with an 85% grade. As a Superior Small Lodging member you will be included in the 2012 Greater Fort Lauderdale Superior Small Lodging directory, as well as the SSL website www.superiorsmalllodging.com, the Broward  listing on www.sunny.org/ssl, Broward SSL Facebook page www.facebook.com/superiorsmalllodgings and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Playbook. Spring Derby
The CVB hosted a group of 13 planners in the area from April 2-5 for our annual Spring Derby Preview. Prospective buyers from the Northeast, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic all had a wonderful few days learning about what Fort Lauderdale has to offer to their clients and their delegates. Port News
Port Everglades recorded an 18.4% increase in multi-day cruise activity for the first six months of its fiscal year, with 2,518,445 cruise passengers embarking and debarking through the Port for the period ending March 31, 2011 compared to 2,127,835 passengers the prior year. Port Everglades is the cruise ship capital of the world with more than 3.9 million passengers expected during 2011 and more homeported cruise ships than any cruise port worldwide. Fourteen cruise lines and more than 54 cruise ships set sail from Port Everglades.

Guests Driving to Miami or the Florida Keys?
Tolls on Florida's Turnpike, from Exit 1 to Exit 47 in Miami-Dade County, are only collected electronically with SunPass or with TOLL-BY-PLATE, a system that takes a photo of a vehicle's license plate and mails a bill to the vehicle's registered owner. Cash toll collections have been removed on this segment of the Turnpike.
