Greater Fort Lauderdale is not only home to 23 miles of golden sand beaches but also to an array of dive sites and marine life. From Deerfield Beach in the north to Hallandale Beach in the south, a unique natural three-tiered reef system begins in 20 feet of water just 100 yards from shore at its closest point. And more than 75 artificial reefs have been placed on the ocean's floor over the past 20 years as magnets for fish and reef life.

"Just gorgeous. That's impressive," said Michael Sole, Florida's environmental chief. He had just returned to the boat after scuba diving off Fort Lauderdale, where he viewed elkhorn and staghorn coral, recently listed as endangered species.  As his trip neared its end, Sole peered out over the glistening, emerald green ocean and pointed to a pod of dolphins bobbing along a reef. 

Beginning in depths of 30 feet, there are more than 100 dive sites with permanent mooring buoys to reduce anchor damage.
