Huzzah! The Florida Renaissance Festival Returns

By Christie Galeano-DeMott

Journey back in time to an era where kings ruled and knights jousted. Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park will once again be transformed into a 16th-century fair for the 28th annual Florida Renaissance Festival. Taking place every Saturday and Sunday from February 8 until March 22, this bona fide festival will transport you away from the digital age and into a land of fairies and fair maidens.

Entertainment and Games

Renaissance Festival

Screen time is replaced by thrilling live entertainment including traveling musical ensembles, poetry performances, horse stunt shows, roaming magicians, aerobatic dancers, falconry, jugglers, Irish dancers, and much more.

If you’re in search of something more interactive, there are plenty of rides and games for all ages. Hop onto the giant rocking horse, fly over the festival on the zipline, or get lost in the magical labyrinth maze—you can do it all at this festival! If you want to flex your strength or try something completely new, there are plenty of opportunities to sharpen your archery, axe throwing, or crossbow skills.

Food and Vendors

The scent of giant turkey legs roasting on the fire drifts across the air as you make your way through the artisan marketplace that features a plethora of merchants selling their handmade goods including jewelry, fairy wings, armor, and renaissance apparel.

Along with plenty of pints and much mead, you will find a variety of international foods to sample and savor at the festival including American corn dogs and fried green tomatoes, English meat pies, Italian pizzas, Greek gyros and hummus, Asian noodle bowls, and Latin empanadas. Don’t forget dessert—try the deep-fried Twinkies, Snickers, or funnel cakes.

Events

Renaissance Festival

Make sure to catch one of the exhilarating catapult, cannon, and live knight fighting shows. After each demonstration experts are on hand to answer any questions or maybe even let you try on a piece of armor. You will also be able to pick up a tip or two during the live demonstrations of blacksmithing and glassblowing.

For those who want to tour the festival by sampling a few pints, make sure to purchase separate tickets for the daily Pub Crawl, which has 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. departures. A hilarious duo are your village tour guides who will share historical stories, risqué toasts, and a lot of fun while you visit five pubs around the grounds and enjoy a drink at each one. Tickets are $35 per person and a valid ID is required.

The Florida Renaissance Festival elevates themed parties to another level with its weekly themed weekends. Themes range from Tudors and Vikings to Time Travelers and Swashbucklers & Sirens. There’s even a Celtic Celebration, and the festival concludes with Witches & Wizards. Make sure to check online for the exact dates of each themed weekend and start getting your costume ready!
