FORT LAUDERDALE SELECTED AS HOST CITY FOR 2013 AND 2014 FLORIDA POLICE AND FIRE GAMES
Games Set To Return To South Florida For First Time in Two Decades
Fort Lauderdale – Score one for the home team! The City of Fort Lauderdale, in partnership with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, has been named host city for the 2013 and 2014 Florida Police and Fire Games by the event’s board of directors.
The board’s selection marks the first time that the City of Fort Lauderdale will play host to the Florida Police and Fire Games and only the second time in 20 years that the week-long multi sports event will be played in South Florida.
“Congratulations to Fort Lauderdale,” said Jolene Coats, Director of Operations for the Florida Police and Fire Games. “The selection committee was impressed with the City’s enthusiasm, resources and facilities, along with the area’s diverse options for lodging and accommodations. We look forward to bringing the games to Fort Lauderdale for two very successful years.”
Established in 1985, the Florida Police and Fire Games are dedicated to "promoting physical fitness and building stronger bonds for our defenders of freedom." The games annually take place during the third full week of June and are open to Florida law enforcement, firefighters, and military personnel (active duty, reserves, National Guard and retirees from all branches of the military).
More than 3,500 men and women representing more than 200 police, fire, law enforcement and public safety agencies from across Florida are expected to participate in the 2013 and 2014 games.
“Having thousands of men and women competing in a week of exciting sporting events will be a great way to kick off our sunsational summer season. The Florida Police and Fire Games will bring more than 7,500 visitors to Greater Fort Lauderdale and generate an estimated economic impact of more than $3 million,” said Nicki E. Grossman, President of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The Florida Police and Fire Games feature more than 40 competitive sports, including: archery, baseball, basketball, bowling, cycling, track and field, flag football, fishing, golf, powerlifting, roller hockey, skeet, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, triathlon, volleyball and more.
Events will take place at sites and facilities in the City of Fort Lauderdale and in neighboring municipalities throughout Broward County. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department, in partnership with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau Sports Development Office, will coordinate logistics, operations, volunteers, lodging and accommodations, hospitality and support function.

Every two years, the Florida Police and Fire Games Board of Directors selects a community to host the event. Past host cities have included Tampa, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Miami, Tallahassee, Gainesville, Cocoa Beach, the Treasure Coast, and Sarasota.
