Statement from Stacy Ritter, President and CEO

GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (January 11, 2017) – Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims of last week’s random, senseless act at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Our community is deeply saddened that something so horrific could occur in our warm and welcoming destination. The outpouring of support we have received from around the world has been overwhelming and deeply appreciated.

Through a concentrated effort by many partners, the airport was able resume operations and flight schedules by the following morning. Efforts continue around the clock to reunite passengers with their luggage and personal belongings, as well as to assist visitors still in the destination with their travel plans.

In times of crisis, strong communities come together. Broward County quickly activated its resources – to evacuate and relocate people to facilities where they received food, water and shelter. We commend the Red Cross, local, state and federal authorities for their assistance and our local hotels that offered to serve as communications centers and provided accommodations for displaced passengers. We also thank our transportation partners dispatching all available drivers to provide transfers to hotels, some even offering free ride services.

Greater Fort Lauderdale’s spirit is resilient and strong. Our outlook is vibrant and positive with new developments in tourism and hospitality on the horizon. We are confident that the goodwill we have built with our many clients, stakeholders and visitors in providing a safe and welcoming environment and exceptional experiences will assure our continued popularity and success.
