Small lodging delivers superior stays in Greater Fort Lauderdale. One of the destination's more popular programs, Superior Small Lodging, epitomizes the personalized "mom and pop"-style hotel experience - and has attracted more than 51 properties from Hollywood through Deerfield Beach. Born in Fort Lauderdale, the Superior Small Lodging initiative has grown statewide.
For good reason. The voluntary program encourages owners or managers of properties of fewer than 50 rooms to agree to annual comprehensive and independent reviews of such areas as public spaces, guest accommodations, bathrooms and bathroom supplies, kitchens, and property exterior.
The Superior Small Lodging collection is ideal for travelers who prefer to stay at properties featuring personalized service and individual character in an intimate retreat.
"It's the perfect fit between vacationers who want unique accommodations, and hoteliers who promise a more quaint vacation experience," said Nicki E. Grossman, president of Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. "What debuted two decades ago as a way to showcase our smaller properties today is the standard for quality small lodging in Greater Fort Lauderdale and throughout Florida."
The charm of many of the boutique-style properties is apparent from their names, like the Bougainvillea on the Beach, Manta Ray Inn, Pelican Place or Villa Venezia. Whether boutique hotels, villa homes, apartments and suites, many feature European, Mediterranean, Caribbean, Polynesia or authentic South Florida architectural styles. Some cater to LGBT vacationers; some are clothing optional, others pet friendly. Most are within a walk or drive from the beach, parks and golf courses, restaurants, shops or cultural venues.
The allure of the Superior Small Lodging program goes beyond the commitment to well-maintained accommodations. Properties often provide a level of personalized service unavailable at larger properties. Owners, many of whom were once vacationers themselves, interact with guests and become longtime friends. Some may feature weekly BBQs or gatherings, afternoon poolside cocktails, or morning coffee beneath palm trees and surrounded by tropical gardens.
Another program, the Donal A. Dermody White Glove Award for best housekeeping practices, each year recognizes those properties that score 100% during an independent housekeeping inspection. In 2013, 50 hotels and inns were members of the "100% Club." In all, Greater Fort Lauderdale's 41 Superior Small Lodgings averaged a score of 97% during housekeeping inspections. Together, the Superior Small Lodging designation and the White Glove Award ensure quality, comfort, personalized service and affordable prices - often in a delightful and intimate setting.
