Last month, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority held their board meeting at the Diplomat Resort & Spa. In attendance was county administrator, Bertha Henry, welcoming the Delta Leadership to Broward County. Angella Lopez with the CVB, is working to complete the RFP request to host the 2020 regional conference which will bring more than 14,000 Delta’s to the destination in June 2020. In May, Fernando Harb accompanied the Visit Florida Delegation to Beijing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Shanghai for the Chinese Sales Mission. Fernando also hosted a seminar entitled “Welcoming the Chinese Guest” at the Broward County Convention Center to educate our hotel partners of the intricacies of the Chinese market. Erick Garnica participated in a Canadian sales mission to Toronto and Montreal, conducting sales calls to tour operators and travel consultants. In addition, he participated at Travel Market Place tradeshow in Toronto, Canada, with more than 200 travel consultants. Erick also participated at the Next Travel Trade Exchange tradeshow in Cancun, Mexico, for travel industry professionals in the Americas. He conducted more than 40 appointments with representatives from Latin America to discuss how they are working with our hotel partners, also providing the latest information on happenings in our destination from airline development and cruise port expansion.   uss bataalan

Caitlan traveled to Tucson, AZ for the Global Travel Marketplace West Conference, a three day conference, meeting with more than 70 travel agents from Virtuoso, Vacation.Com, Ensemble and Signature to name a few. She also attended the Cruise Planner New Franchise Owner show at the Broward County Convention Center with more than 100 agents in attendance. Caitlan, along with Anna Levin from Strategic Client Services, hosted pre and post FAM trips for last month. More than 800 travel agents visited the destination including attractions such as Jungle Queen Riverboat, Sawgrass Recreational Park and Las Olas on the Cycle Party.  A tradeshow for was held, along with a welcome reception, hosted by the GFLCVB at the Museum of Discovery & Science, where agents and suppliers enjoyed an evening of entertainment and fun.  Justin Flippen attended the May meeting of the VISIT FLORIDA Cultural, Heritage, Rural & Nature (CHRN) Committee, concluding his second term as a member of the CHRN committee.  Justin also attended Fleet Week events, including a visit to the USS Bataan while it was docked in Port Everglades.

The team was in Southampton this month to attend the 10th Annual CLIA Cruise Conference, of which GFLCVB was a sponsor. The three day event consisted of a travel agent street party, where Hello Sunny branded sunglasses and destination info was handed out to travel agents and suppliers. The team was able to meet with more than 450 travel agents and key members of the cruise industry, while attending networking events. Charlotte Fox with Hills Balfour, hosted six top tier UK & Ireland journalists on the 2016 UK press trip showcasing the destination. Highlights included an early evening gondola tour, airboat ride through the everglades, a rum distillery and tasting tour at South Florida Distillers, shopping at Sawgrass Mills, kayaking, and a number of restaurants across Greater Fort Lauderdale.

Sports welcomes more than 20,000 athletes, coaches, and families to Greater Fort Lauderdale in June including the Association of Chief Executives for Sports (ACES) Summer Conference at the Westin Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale, the Northwest International Track and Field Classic at Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, the USSSA Boys State Basketball Championships in various gym locations throughout Broward, the FLA  International Invite Swim Meet at the Plantation Aquatic Complex, the Davie Pro Rodeo at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, and the Sunshine State Games Water Polo at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

Richard Gray met with government officials in Medellin, Colombia, getting ready to launch the LGBTQ Colombia initiative and laying the ground work for the 2016/2017 LGBTQ campaign. He will return at the end of June to attend the LGBT conference. Richard was interviewed by the United Nations on Fort Lauderdale's commitment and success in being the global leader in marketing to Transgender travelers. He was also interviewed by Travel & Leisure and sat on a Transgender Panel “Transforming the Workplace” at the Hyatt Place in Fort Lauderdale. He will attend One Magical Weekend's Disney events at Gay Days Orlando June 2-5. One Magical Weekend will be launching their Fort Lauderdale "Teddy" event this Halloween with the B Ocean Fort Lauderdale as the host hotel. Also in June, Greater Fort Lauderdale will launch the Provincetown Lesbian summer campaign as the sponsor of Girl Power Productions and their 4 summer events.

Noelle Stevenson partnered with the GLAAD Media Awards, an annual LGBT film event in NY last month, promoting the MIFO Fort Lauderdale Film Festival and inviting key filmmakers and celebrities as guests to this year’s film festival. Noelle also interviewed Culture Club's lead guitarist, Roy Hay. Culture Club performs at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on July 8. Click here to read about the interview.

Total passenger traffic for April 2016 was 2,463,673, up 4.9% over April last year. Domestic traffic increased by 5.0%. International traffic was up 4.7%. Total Canadian traffic for April was up 4.2% over last year. April was the 25th consecutive month of positive growth in total passenger traffic. New service for 2016 includes JetBlue: Aguadilla (Puerto Rico) in May, Nashville in May, San Diego in June, and New Orleans in September. Spirit: Philadelphia in April. A recent study identifies Broward County's Port Everglades as an evolving tourism magnet for the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. Sixty-two percent of the cruise passengers surveyed for the study stayed at least one night prior to their cruise vacation, staying an average of 3.4 nights, and 21% planned to stay an average of 2.6 nights after their cruise.
