Congratulations to Albert Tucker, who received the John Wilkerson Distinguished Service Award from the American Tennis Association (ATA), the oldest African-American sports organization in the country. The award recognizes Albert’s distinguished service and dedication to the ATA and the game of tennis. The ATA’s 98th National Championship was held in Greater Fort Lauderdale, August 3-9, 2015, and attracted players from around the country, bringing an influx of thousands of adult and junior tennis players to the destination. Albert was also honored with a tourism award from the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO), which held its Summer Conference August 5-8 in Greater Fort Lauderdale.
Al Tucker will be traveling to New York Sept 4-8 to meet with clients and participate in the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Diversity & Inclusion Committee. In August, Fernando Harb and Erick Garnica participated at Virtuoso Travel Week and conducted more than 400 appointments with luxury travel consultants from around the globe. During these four-minute appointments, providers share what’s new, what’s trending, and what’s perfect for the advisors’ clients. Erick presented to travel consultants and media at the Visit USA Workshops in Peru, a steadily increasing market with non-stop flights from Lima to FLL on various airlines. Caitlan attended the first-ever NACTA Florida Summit in Cocoa Beach, where she gave a seminar to 50 agents and attended a tradeshow to promote the destination to more than 120 NACTA agents. She also participated in the American Society of Travel Agents Global Convention from Aug 28-Sept 2 in Washington, D.C. Justin Flippen continues to represent the CVB on the Broward100 project. The Broward100 Art of Community Programming Committee, of which Justin is a member, has approved the latest VisualEYES mural artwork design to be installed in the City of Sunrise.

Broward County will reach its 100th birthday milestone in October 2015 and the culmination of this year-long celebration starts at 8pm Fri, Oct 2 in downtown Fort Lauderdale with a grand opening take-over featuring street performers, live music by bands and DJs, a drum battle, light shows, street art, dancers and more. The party continues all day Sat, Oct 3 with the Party of the Century starring Tito Puente, Jr., son of the Mambo legend who brings his twist on his father’s music; Willie Stewart, formerly of the Reggae band Third World, brings his repertoire of musicians with extraordinary percussion excitement; Grammy Award-winning pianist Marlow Rosado brings his powerful portfolio of salsa, rock, merengue, hip-hop, bachata and reggaeton to the stage and George Tandy, Jr. will create brilliant music rich with honesty, vulnerability and raw emotion. In addition, there will be a bevy of local artists and performers throughout downtown Fort Lauderdale on SW Second Street from the railroad tracks to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Total passenger traffic for June 2015 was 2,135,608, up 10.1% over June last year. Domestic traffic increased by 7.2%. International traffic was up 22.7%. June 2015 marked the first time that total passenger traffic in the month of June exceeded 2 million passengers. It was the 19th consecutive month of double-digit growth in international passenger traffic. It was also the 15th consecutive month of growth in total passengers. The most recent Airports Council International (ACI) data ranked FLL 2nd among large hub airports in international traffic growth up 21.7%, and 2nd in total traffic growth, up 8.5% (12 months ending June 2015). Upcoming new international service includes: Dynamic Airways now offering daily service to Caracas, Venezuela and JetBlue offering service to Mexico City in Oct 2015, Providenciales (Turks and Caicos) in Nov 2015 and Quito, Ecuador in Q1 2016. New domestic service includes: JetBlue offering service to Baltimore, Charleston, Philadelphia and, Albany in Dec 2015; Southwest offering service to DCA in Aug 2015 and Minneapolis in Jan 2016; Allegiant offering service to Portsmouth, NH; Akron, OH; and Rochester in Oct 2015 and San Antonio in Nov 2015. FLL Expansion Update: The South Runway - opened September 2014. Terminal Modernization is well underway with estimated completion of Terminals 1, 2, and 3 in mid-2017. Terminal 1, Concourse A with 5 international gates, estimate to be completed in mid-2017. Terminal 4 with 12 new international gates and 2 domestic gates, first phase of west expansion opened on July 14 with two gates in the G concourse. East expansion expected to be completed late 2017.
Internationally renowned glass sculptor Dale Chihuly has created beautiful glass wall sconces for Port Everglades as part of the Florida port’s continuous investments in the ultimate cruise guest experience. Also on the drawing board are dramatic renovations for Cruise Terminal 25 that include welcoming amenities for guests. In the last seven years, Port Everglades has completely renovated six of its nine cruise terminals. Each of the remodeled terminals features spacious baggage halls, ample seating, brighter lighting and improved traffic flows. Like its predecessors, Cruise Terminal 25 will be completely revamped to increase its current size and improve passenger processing. Artwork, such as Chihuly’s “Coral Glow Persian Sconce Wall” recently installed in Cruise Terminal 4, are part of the overall experience. In addition, the Florida cruise port invested nearly $200,000 earlier this year to upgrade Wi-Fi in each of its nine cruise terminals so guests, as well as shore operations, have speedy Internet access to upload selfies as they board.

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale has announced major improvements to refine its shopping experience with the addition of Free People and REM French Riviera, plus the relocation and renovation of several existing retailers. A completely transformed food court, renamed Palm Court Market, will reopen Nov 1 with eclectic casual eateries. As of today, Sun Trolley’s free Uptown Link Route will run from 11am-3pm. The route has also been shortened so working professionals will only wait approximately seven or eight minutes. The Uptown Link trolleys run from the Cypress Creek Tri-Rail Station, east on Cypress Creek Blvd to the Uptown Centre, north on Andrews Ave., to Microsoft/Marriott, then back south on Andrews to the Cypress Creek Station, and west on Cypress Creek Blvd. to the Citrix Loop.
